English football subject to more restrictions, this time by the BGC

The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) has imposed new regulations preventing gambling advertisements on football clubs social media posts

The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) is imposing new regulations involving big football clubs that stop any gambling ads on their social medias in a bid to stop gambling exposure.

The main aim of this new initiative is to stop underage users, those under 18, becoming exposed to online gambling ads, after concerns were raised due to the volume of gambling ads on their official Twitter accounts.

Clubs will no longer be able to include CTAs (call to actions) or any links to gambling websites on social media posts that are not being promoted.

Other forms that are banned from here on now are bonus offers and odds.

The BGC has formally written to Premier League and English Football League stating how influential and important they are to society, with the BGC chairman Brigid Simmonds:

BGC Brigid Simmons - SiGMA NEWS

Football clubs are an important part of the sporting fabric of this country, followed by millions of all ages on social media

Our members rightly have a zero tolerance approach to gambling by under-18s, so as an industry we are understandably concerned that children may be exposed to betting adverts on social media platforms.

Our new guidelines make clear the standards expected of football clubs when they post gambling promotions on social media, and I look forward to them being put into practice as soon as possible.

Football clubs in the UK have been under scrutiny recently with a number of authorities calling for blanket bans on gambling advertisements.

The blanket ban will cause many clubs to lose money and potentially go into administration as they will lose valuable sponsorship money which helps run the clubs finances.

With this latest regulation being implemented throughout English Football, it seems that Clean Up Gambling’s initiative for this blanket ban is looking more likely.
