Malta government lures digital nomads with Nomad Residence Permit

With this permit remote workers can benefit from a six month visa with the option to benefit from a one-year residency

Today the Government of Malta launched a new residency permit aimed at attracting remote workers to the country. This move will see business owners and remote workers in Malta get a one year nomad residency worth €300. While the residency would be in Malta, taxes would be payable to a different jurisdiction.

During a press conference addressed this morning, Parliamentary Secretary for Citizenship Alex Muscat, together with Residency Malta Agency CEO Charles Mizzi and Identity Malta’s Anton Sevasta introduced the launch of the Nomad Residence Permit.

Applicants registering for the scheme must prove that they are working remotely, are owners of a company conducting business activity, or freelancers offering consulting services to international clients. The applicants must have a valid passport and proof that they are living in a residential property in Malta.

Digital Nomad schemeMuscat said “Trends show that nomadic professionals are looking for safe places, even in terms of the healthcare that is available to them. We believe Malta is an ideal safe and secure destination to live and work in and we’re taking this step to introduce the ancillary services that accommodate these professions.”

The affiliate industry is in sync with this work habit. This trend is highly anticipated by affiliates looking to boost their connections overseas and will prove to be a step forward for more affiliates choosing Malta as their go to destination. “There’s a market for digital nomads. We’ve already attracted digital nomads in the past, ” Muscat said.

In today’s world, work is where your laptop is, and the government is doing its best to respond to several enquires coming from the gaming and IT sector. Various employees in this sector often choose to spend months in different countries as they wouldn’t need to report to the office.

Charles Mizzi says that preparations have been ongoing for the past months and the idea behind the new system is to provide an efficient service and goes on to say that ‘if there are any lessons learnt from the pandemic is that people are willing to move more than ever before, early to recognize the signs, Residency Malta has launched this new permit that allows digital nomads to come to Malta and work here, while enjoying all the perks that Malta offers foreigners. The process is simple and we promise an efficient service that discerning nomads expect.”

This will be delved into in more detail during the Affiliate Grand Slam (AGS) summit taking place in Malta in November. During our conference, various speakers and government bodies will have the opportunity to expand on this service and how various affiliates can benefit from this scheme. The summit will form part of Malta Week, a week of back-to-back events including the AGS.

This is a chance to tap into the synergy between the ample cross pollination opportunities available between the emerging tech, digital health, digital marketing and gaming sectors, while making the most of what the digital island has to offer.
