Illinois registers another betting handle record despite drop in revenue

Illinois sports betting handle for December reached $491.7m, while revenue dropped to $23.9m

Sports betting in America continues to strive as Illinois is the latest state to break a record. Sports bettors recorded a $491.7m handle for December, an increase of 9% from November despite barely any retail activity being recorded.

However, it was not all good news as revenue dropped by 41.3% when compared to November to $23.9m.

During December, casinos were closed for the majority of the month and as a result retail betting revenue amounted to a measly $97,915, with the recorded retail handle just over $180,000 (182,701).

The leader in retail revenue was Casino Queen thanks to DraftKings’ sports book totalling $106,254.

Meanwhile, online revenue amounted to $23.8m, down 40% compared to month-on-month. However, online bettors placed $487.3m which is up 12.4%. This simply means that players won the majority of their bets.

The three way race:

  • Illinois sports betting FanDuel - SiGMA NEWSFanDuel – $7.1m
  • DraftKings – $6.9m
  • Rush Street Interactive – $6.8m

The state benefited from this through gaining $3.8m in tax, with the top 3 operators contributing $1.1m each.

The majority of Illinois’ handle came from professional sports bet at $321m, bringing in revenue of $15m. College sports brought in $165.9m, casinos $8.6m, motor sports $26,507.

The most popular sport in December was football recording revenue of $4.9m and a handle of $204.4m, while parlay bets recorded $5.4m – more than any sport.
