Tanzania imposes a new tax scheme on virtual gaming operators

The new 10% tax scheme will result in added gross revenue for the Gaming Board of Tanzania

The government in Tanzania wants operators that offer virtual games to punters to pay a 10% tax on all virtual games in Tanzania, resulting in added gross revenue for the Gaming Board of Tanzania.

The Gaming Board of Tanzania is the regulator of the country and also acts as the advisor to the government on subjects related to taxes and fees for gambling.

Back in 2019, the Tanzanian government introduced an amendment on the country’s gambling act, legalising virtual gambling games but tax rates were still unconfirmed.

Following the proposed recommendations, all stakeholders have been called to give their input before the final bill is passed, with the end date for their input set at 7th February.

Tanzania gaming regulationJimmy Kennedy, the gaming stakeholder chairmain, commended the government when speaking to the Citizen. He said that it is a good sign that the government has decided to involve the stakeholders in different issues.

Mr. Kennedy told the Citizen:

“Not only has the government been involving us in various matters, but it also has been immediately implementing or finding solutions to issues that require our involvement,”

Tanzania has introduced a number of amendments to its gambling legislation, which grants increased enforcement powers to Tanzania’s regulator and the number of segments covered by its licences.

The gaming scene in Tanzania has experienced a number of significant changes regarding the country’s gambling framework, introducing a number of restrictions on advertisements and the suspension of sports betting and slot machine licensing. However, the Board has now allowed operators to advertise their products – ending a ban on advertising in Tanzania.

The 2019 amendments also included new licence categories for lotteries, service providers, entities supplying goods or services to operators and gaming consultants.
